I also liked his book! “Epistle To Dippy” is one of my all-time favorite songs. If you’ve never heard it, I highly recommend his “Donovan” album on RAK / Arista from 1977, it’s great. As is “Cosmic Wheels” etc. Thank you for the music, Donovan. I feel like I’ve known you for most of my life.

It's interesting. For years I've only heard about Donovan's beginnings as a Dylan clone. Certainly, the music for which he's rightfully known in the States bears no resemblance to Mr. Zimmerman.
Well, we got on a Dylan kick about 18 months ago what with the Todd Haynes film, the Socorsese film and all out at much the same time. I suggested that we check out the seminal and much-read-about "Don't Look Back." It was an eye opener but yes, early Donovan did really walk in the Dylan footsteps, much to Dylan's delight in taking the p*ss.
Fortunately, he quickly grew beyond that early beginning to the more distinctive and trippy popmeister we all know and love. In much the same way that certain music can be called "Dylanesque" as a valid adjective, the same certainly applies to Donovan. I only saw him once, in Atlanta around 1991-2. I'd have to check the ticket stub to make sure. It was a good show that shocked me by how much music I knew.
I forgot to add 40 lashed with a pica ruler for the designer who thought of combining Eurostyle type with Gill Sans on the cover of that otherwise nice looking Donovan "Colours" EP! Nice to know that design didn't just suck in the computer-aided design era!
Nice to know Don & Dyl get the thumbs up around here.
