It certainly was the best series ever in that it actually asked relevant questions: what is the nature of man's relationship to society? Just asking such questions is significant.
It certainly hasn't dated in its themes. Hell, it HAD themes!

I notice (and probably noticed before, but forgot) that the picture used for the placard of "Number Six" is actually a publicity shot from Dangerman/Secret Agent Man, where McGoohan played Agent John Drake.
