Take a look at my Flickr site. I have recently posted an alphabet over there! In the future, I want to have the two sites (this & Flickr) interact more.

Blogging...

7-30-08 Blogging

Well, I’m off for a few days…off to Portland, OR to observe my 50th birthday. I hope to resume blogging on or around August 6th, 2008. I get to meet some of my long-time readers, folks – some for the first time! And I will get to see lots of old friends.

For the interested few, this completes my 6th year of blogging. I started roughly on July 30, 2002…I believe my initial blog was about The Monkees. If anybody gives a monkey’s – I’ve got an index of every blog I’ve ever written that I could send you.

Blogging was suggested to me by my old friend Warren. At first, the idea was for me to pick a random title from my collection and write about it. That lasted a couple of months, then I began ‘doing alphabets’, writing on special subjects etc. And we all know how it has turned out so far.

Earlier this year, I killed off (deleted) the first incarnation of my blog, “20th Century Music”. It was nearly 700 posts – I thought I’d ‘give back’ some of my universal bandwith! But we’re doing well over here at “The Ron Kane Files”…

Towards the end of “20th Century Music” – I ran the largest alphabet ever – acknowledging everybody who ever suggested a title to me, or at very least trying to determine where I’d first heard of something. It ran for months. At the conclusion, I kept posting something every month, just to keep the index that one could see in the status of ‘current’. I merely tired of the meaningless monthly “Check out my new blog!” postings…

I plan on continuing in pretty much the same vein as previous. I think I like the “Playlists” the best – and maybe I’ll try to do some more label discographies. And, as always, I enjoy reader requests!

Always check out the comments, too. Top commentator / commentor Jim Donato is always an interesting read. He’s one of the people I get to meet in Portland very soon!

Since getting a new digital camera last May, I’ve really been into going to botanical gardens…and the San Diego Zoo. Rest assured my birdwatching hobby remains ‘amateur’. Don’t forget to check out my Flickr site, I'm user “rk-dd”.

Anybody want to start a collaborative music / writing blog? Or a Yahoo group?

So, when I return – we’ll be back to examining the minutae of pop music, and holding everything up to the dusty old mirror of THE INSPECTOR’S BRAIN for a closer look. I thank each and every reader of my blog(s). With any luck, we’ll get to buy each other some drinks up in Portland!

“If I had all the money I’ve spent on drink, I’d spend it on drink!” – Vivian Stanshall.

18,250

7-29-08 18,250

18,250 is close to the number of days that it takes to have been alive for 50 years. I also think that it’s the number that is about the maximum size of titles in a proper music collection. If it takes you 50 years to get 18,250 titles, that’s one new music title for each day you’ve been alive, at age 50. Any number of titles over 18,250 is to be regarded, essentially, as ‘over-collecting’. As of today’s date, my music collection numbers 21,795 – so for a 50-year-old – I have over collected to the number of 3,545 music titles. In other words – if I ‘get’ 18,250 titles in 50 years, it could potentially take me another 50 years to play them all. Anything over18,250 titles…I theoretically do not have the time to listen to a second time!

Not that I expect to live to be 100 years old, mind you! Ooh, with having over-collected 3,545 titles, I guess I can take 9+ years off from buying new music! Or possibly I should sell off some titles, to get the collection back down to 18,250 – in time for my 50th birthday? Well, I can’t quite do that – the Claremont LP Swap meet isn’t until Sun. 9/21/08!

As some of you will already know, I am having my 50th birthday event in Portland, OR in a few days. I am really looking forward to it – seeing all my friends etc. I have visited Portland a few times before, and it’s a decent place, as far as I am concerned. And it’s far away enough from L.A. to be of interest to me.

At present, I am playing with an idea of “re-typing” the listings for my record collection, adding a few ‘columns’. I am sort of bugged that the “Comments” section in my present Excel list contains both ‘release date’ and ‘number of tracks’ – those should be in separate columns, don’t you think? It would be a giant under-taking, but…it would accomplish a few things – a more accurate list, and I also wouldn’t bother typing up stuff that was not of primary interest to me – as in: easier to get rid of stuff! We’ll see how far it gets; the template has been created, and I am going to experiment with throwing a few titles / artists into the new template / format.

When I reach the ‘ideal collection’, I will advise!

- Ron

P.S. I recently had the chance to meet up again with the poet and lyricist Pete Brown (the man who is one half of “Bruce/Brown” – the folks who wrote many neat Cream songs). “What would Ron talk to Pete Brown about?”, I hear you ask. Well, I raved about having finally seen Hermeto Pascoal play live – and he understood. He and I are both Hermeto freaks. He played me some tracks that he was working on, potentially for a new album (his first album of new material since the wonderful “Coals To Jerusalem” CD, 1993). I’ve known Mr. Brown for over 20 years. It’s nice to stay in touch with him. These days, I try to stay in touch with as many of my ‘old friends’ as possible.

Floyd Cramer

7-28-08 Floyd Cramer

When someone at a swap meet says to me, “Got any Floyd?” – I happily say: “Yes, the Floyd Cramer LP’s are in the left-hand crate!”. Mr. Cramer has nearly as many initial works as Ryuichi Sakamoto! It’s very difficult to remember which ones I already have, when confronted with many (inexpensive) Floyd Cramer LP’s. Good thing I carry around my Palm M125!

Mr. Cramer passed away in 1997, about the time I was really getting started collecting his RCA LP’s. His 70’s LP’s are very groovy indeed! The “Class Of” set is literally one of the very few easy listening LP sets to document the ‘hit single to easy hit’ phenomena over such a length of time.

I was recently given the “Floyd Cramer Plays The Monkees” LP – now I have at least 3 different dedicated Monkees easy listening LP’s!

And Floyd played on some good Elvis records!

Stump

7-24-08 Stump

Just when you thought that everything that has been said about the Scottish / Irish group Stump has already been said…

There is a recently released 3CD boxed set on Sanctuary Records in England called “Stump: The Complete Anthology”! Two entire discs (24 tracks; “Mud On A Colon” and “Quirk Out”; Disc 3 is all post-”Pancake” songs) making their CD debut! And, yes, the set includes the entire “A Fierce Pancake” CD. No, it doesn’t contain their massive “Peel Sessions” tracks, alas – so it ain’t quite ‘complete’.

To recap, there are apparently no female Stump fans. And thus far, here’s what I’ve managed to hold on to:

BUFFALO ENSIGN UK ENYX 619 12"

MUD ON A COLON RON JOHNSON ZRON 6 12"

PEEL SESSIONS, THE STRANGE FR UK SFPS 019 12"

1987 4 TRKS with pic sleeve ('86 recording)

QUIRK OUT STUFF UK STUF/U2 12"

1986 6 TRK EP; with pic sleeve, insert

I have also searched out the solo CD’s by their bassist, Kev Hopper:

SAURUS DRAG CITY US DC 223CD CD 2001 6 TRK EP

SPOOMBUNG THOOFA UK THOOFA 1 CD 1998 13 TRKS

STOLEN JEWELS GHETTO UK GHETTD 4 CD 1990 14 TRKS

WHISPERING FOILS DRAG CITY US DC 201CD CD 2000 11 TRKS

I urge you to check out this amusing band! I once saw them interviewed on MuchMusic, the Canadian MTV. Very funny guys. I read that they had a brief re-union in Ireland in ’06 – oh, I would’ve liked to have seen that!

Is Stump somewhere between XTC and Captain Beefheart? Throw in a handful of Holger Hiller, some Mick Karn, even some Monochrome Set…they’re very British, despite being both Scottish and Irish!

Long live the massive STUMP!

My dad had LP’s by Brazilian organist Walter Wanderley – he likely heard of him when “Summer Samba” became a hit in 1966. My dad listened to a lot of radio at that time – I particularly remember him enjoying KMPC-AM, he listened to shows by both Geoff Edwards and Gary Owens (before Owens was a house-hold name on “Laugh-In”).

When my dad passed away in 1989, I found all of his Walter Wanderley LP’s, and I kept them all, adding to the collection whenever possible. I recently got nice CD re-issues from Japan of “Batucada” and “Cheganca”. They sound great. I admit to being a little surprised to find vocals on Wanderley’s albums. I knew he had backed Astrud Gilberto, but…I didn’t know he hired vocalists for his own albums.

I guess he started recording towards the end of the 50’s – but…sure never saw any WW LP’s that old! I suppose the Tower and Philips LP’s are older than the Verve LP’s – and I sort of remember the 70’s C.T.I. LP…but I can’t recall it’s name. Mr. Wanderley passed away in 1986.

I can probably easily find a CD of the “Rain Forest” album – so I guess really I am only after his final Verve solo album, “Kee-Ka-Roo”, as a CD. I think all of his Verve LP’s were produced by Creed Taylor (the C.T. in C.T.I.)

And let’s not forget Wanderley’s album with Astrud Gilberto, “A Certain Smile”, Verve V6-8673, another one my dad had. I see that it was even released in the U.S. on CD.

I’ve seen Wanderley’s work repackaged for the 90’s Easy Listening revival crowd – but I definitely remember when it was legitimately in the status of ongoing concern of it’s own accord. Easy listening Hammond organ, for Bossa Nova fans. The ’08 Japanese CD’s I got say “History of Bossa Nova” on the obi. So, still legit, after all these years.

I suppose Wanderley’s work spawned assorted ‘imitators’ – but I can’t name any of ‘em!

So, muinto obrigado to Mr. Wanderley for creating works that both my dad and I could relate to. The list of works of this nature isn’t exactly a mile long. Maybe I didn’t care when they were released, but they sound good to me now.

1988 (Ron is 30)

7-22-08 1988 (Ron is 30)

I was unemployed, but still very interested in music. The Compact Disc was now firmly in place as the format of choice. I was selling off LP’s, in some cases to buy compact discs. I’d lost touch with the world of Japanese music when the company I had been working for went out of business in October ’87. I was VERY into French artists! Lots of stuff still wasn’t on CD – but I was definitely entering the “Re-Buy my LP collection on CD” mode.
