Stump

7-24-08 Stump

Just when you thought that everything that has been said about the Scottish / Irish group Stump has already been said…

There is a recently released 3CD boxed set on Sanctuary Records in England called “Stump: The Complete Anthology”! Two entire discs (24 tracks; “Mud On A Colon” and “Quirk Out”; Disc 3 is all post-”Pancake” songs) making their CD debut! And, yes, the set includes the entire “A Fierce Pancake” CD. No, it doesn’t contain their massive “Peel Sessions” tracks, alas – so it ain’t quite ‘complete’.

To recap, there are apparently no female Stump fans. And thus far, here’s what I’ve managed to hold on to:

BUFFALO ENSIGN UK ENYX 619 12"

1988 3 TRKS with pic sleeve

CHAOS ENSIGN UK ENYX 612 12"

1988 3 TRKS with pic sleeve

CHARLETON HESTON ENSIGN UK ENYX 614 12"

1988 4 TRKS with pic sleeve

FIERCE PANCAKE, A CHRYSALIS US VK 41641 CD

1988 12 TRKS U.S. version

FIERCE PANCAKE, A CHRYSALIS US BFV 41641 LP

1988 12 TRKS U.S. version

FOUR TRACK SAMPLER promo ENSIGN UK FRIZ 2 12"

1988 4 TRKS with pic sleeve, promo

MUD ON A COLON RON JOHNSON ZRON 6 12"

1986 4 TRKS with pic sleeve

PEEL SESSIONS, THE STRANGE FR UK SFPS 019 12"

1987 4 TRKS with pic sleeve ('86 recording)

QUIRK OUT STUFF UK STUF/U2 12"

1986 6 TRK EP; with pic sleeve, insert

I have also searched out the solo CD’s by their bassist, Kev Hopper:

SAURUS DRAG CITY US DC 223CD CD 2001 6 TRK EP

SPOOMBUNG THOOFA UK THOOFA 1 CD 1998 13 TRKS

STOLEN JEWELS GHETTO UK GHETTD 4 CD 1990 14 TRKS

WHISPERING FOILS DRAG CITY US DC 201CD CD 2000 11 TRKS

I urge you to check out this amusing band! I once saw them interviewed on MuchMusic, the Canadian MTV. Very funny guys. I read that they had a brief re-union in Ireland in ’06 – oh, I would’ve liked to have seen that!

Is Stump somewhere between XTC and Captain Beefheart? Throw in a handful of Holger Hiller, some Mick Karn, even some Monochrome Set…they’re very British, despite being both Scottish and Irish!

Long live the massive STUMP!

I should look out for that. I like the Stump I've heard on video that I have, but I have NEVER seen Stump product for sale anywhere!

True, they were never exactly over-exposed!

I haven't seen the new 3CD set for sale in Calif., as of this writing.

This set seems to be a little hard to find now. I bought a copy the week it came out but it disappeared from shops pretty soon afterwards sadly. It is real good though, but sadly lacks a few things, such as the BBC sessions EP (maybe cos of copyright?) and also some things like the brilliant 12" mix of Charlton Heston. It's still excellent though, maybe these missing tracks will surface elsewhere on CD.
