Geoff & Maria Muldaur

Geoff & Maria Muldaur – “Pottery Pie”

I first heard (of) this record by a track appearing on a Warner / Reprise “loss leader” double sampler LP (sorry, can’t remember which one, as my LP’s are not in front of me). At the time, I was unaware of Joe Boyd – the record’s producer. I had probably seen his name on an Incredible String Band LP and thought he was British. Took years for me to understand that he was an American in England, producing records etc. It literally took until I got to read Boyd’s wonderful book, “White Bicycles – Making Music In The 60’s” to get that Boyd went from the U.S. east coast to England – to Burbank.

It’s likely Boyd knew Geoff Muldaur from Muldaur having been in Jim Kweskin’s Jug Band – remember ‘jug band music’? The Lovin’ Spoonful, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks etc.? That funny wave of nostalgia for the 20’s, 30’s that came towards the end of the 60’s? One can even lump Ry Cooder’s debut album (Reprise 6402) in with the finely honed / produced U.S. nostalgia camp.

With groups like The Doors and Love – U.S. bands were encouraged (by sales, fan appreciation) to be loud, write hit singles etc. It took some time before the ‘hippie ethic’ transmogrified into ‘gentle hippie nostalgia’ – long hairs playing bluegrass music, hippie couples singing 30’s ballads in coffee houses etc.

One must wonder – was “Pottery Pie” produced (i.e. made) before Warner Brothers got involved? Even though it typifies a “Warner Brothers” album of that early 70’s era – it was made in Boston – likely where both Muldaur (and Boyd) were ‘comfortable’, and ‘established’. It’s a wonderful collection of songs – as though Muldaur was ‘hippie Tony Bennett’ – Catch It (by Eric von Schmidt – an old cohort of Bob Dylan and Richard Farina), I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight (from Dylan’s then-recent “John Wesley Harding” album), New Orleans Hopscotch Blues (which is the cut that I heard on the Warner/Reprise sampler album), Trials Troubles, Tribulations (listed as ‘traditional’, arr. By Maria Muldaur, Geoff’s wife – who went on to fame as the singer of “Midnight At The Oasis” in a few short years)…the list of great songs goes on and on.

The true acknowledgement of this album not being a “lost classic” was when Terry Gilliam used Muldar’s version of “Brazil” in his film of the same name, as the main theme. After this album, Geoff and Maria began making solo albums for Warner Brothers – I do not know the details as to why it was solo albums and not collaborations.

“Pottery Pie” sounds glorious in the new century – wow, they really don’t make them like this anymore, do they? I keep half-an-eye on the McCabe’s Guitar Shop live schedule, where it is not uncommon to see Geoff Muldaur perform on occasion. One of these days, I will go check him out, 35+ years hence from “Pottery Pie” – I never really got into his solo albums of the 70’s, but I bet they’re good records. Popular culture took care of Maria Muldaur. Joe Boyd wrote his story down, for all to read – just glorious. Man, when the art meets the aesthetic – just magic.

The Buggles

Another blog live & direct, without the aid of forethought or proofreading! Today's blog is at the request of Mr. Chas M.

This is what I call a "Trophy Album". I certainly didn't know it at the time. I hadn't cared much for "Video Killed The Radio Star" - but I *loved* "Living In The Plastic Age". I am fortunate; I was going to Europe when this album came out, so I was able to find many 7" and 12" variants of some of the songs. How about that long "Clean Clean"? Let's see what else I can squeeze out of my mental musical locker...

Trevor Horn - something to do with UK soul singer Tina Charles? Bruce Wooley, Thomas Dolby - not exactly what I'd call "angry young men", but...certainly a 'camera club' that weren't going to settle for "moustache rock" (as the folks at amoeba Music in San Francisco call 70's rock). I love the 'historical' sideline about "Video Killer The Radio Star" being the first music video played on MTV. What? You mean they used to play music videos on MTV? Toshi of The Plastics (who were also signed by Island Records in England) told me that "Chris Blackwell knew that MTV was coming, so Island artists in 1979/80/81 were encouraged by the company to make videos, the company would pay for the videos to be made". MTV or not, it seems like nice "production" music videos were being made in England before the U.S. - lucky Buggles, a supportive label, a place to have their video shown, and a whole damned (new) wave to ride.

I bought the LP of this in England - unlike the US edition, it had a neat inner-sleeve, where Trevor Horn told you exactly what was recorded on each of the analogue 24 tracks. Later, I got a Japanese EMI/Toshiba/Island copy, and the inner-sleeve was re-produced, but as a booklet - yeah! And that's a damn fine sounding LP, just clean and quiet as a whistle, the Toshiba pressing.

Then there's the "Yes debacle" - Horn's to produce Yes - "But when do I get to meet Jon Anderson?" - then Bruce Wooley's album comes out - then The Buggles ain't going to tour. Then the label drops 'em. Drops them? Why Isn't there a 2nd Island Buggles album for us to love? They went through the motions with "Adventures in Modern Recording", but..."The Plastic Age" is the album for the age.

I have about a dozen cool 45's of The Buggles - when I posted them on Flickr, they doz dozens of "looks" and comments, and several of the sleeves were voted "favorite" by people that I don't know. A few years back, I got the honor of buying the CD a 2nd time - they added a song or two, and (presumably) made the thing louder and gave it a clear tray.

Very interesting - that 2CD "Tribute to Trevor Horn" British thing that came out a while back - he must not've been disappointed in the relative failure of The Buggles - enough of the stuff he produced in that era really caught it's zeitgeist (ABC, FGTH - acronym bands! etc). Nobody ever talks about Horn's production of Philip Jap or Inga Rumpf.

Chas says "every song is a classic" - and I agree. Very hard to dislike anything at all about this album. Nice solid bass playing, good vocals, snappy production (female vocalists etc). The songs are the stars - I even knew what Elstree was (as I'd accidentally walked right past it, on a visit to London). 25+ years hence, I can even see a tiny little link to M / Robin Scott, another participant in the UK production new wave experience.

I love that Yes got to play a Buggles song or two. For a band (Buggles) ostensibly trying to escape the "70's rock" pantheon...I wonder if they're still friendly? I am going to go out on a limb and say that Trevor Horn did eventually get to meet Jon Anderson. I am always tempted (but have never acted on it), to take my LP of Yes' "Drama" and ask Jon Anderson to autograph it for me. Anderson recently played in a small (and I mean small) bar / club near San Luis Obispo, and I could've done so. Just to be a bone-head.

Too bad there was never a Trevor Horn solo album. He certainly would've known who to get as his backing band (Blockheads, are you FGTH listening?)

M (Robin Scott)

Robin Scott (aka "M") made one of the more charming "new wave" singles of that era, "Pop Muzik" - it was a decent hit, even had a nice music video made for it. Sire records did the honors in th US. I ignored it largely - it was on the radio. I certainly never heard any of these albums at the time. What a shame! When I finally did hear these three, I rather enjoyed them!

Not having even looked at these albums until the mid-90's, I never knew about the people who played on 'em, otherwise - let's just say I would've been all over 'em. For starters, I just love Wally Badarou - I love his work with Level 42, and his solo albums. I didn't know he worked extensively with Mr. Scott! Phil Gould (also Level 42), Gary Barnacle, Mark King (Level 42 again!), David Vorhaus (of White Noise!), the wonderful Brigit Vinchon (aka Brigit Novic) (his female vocalist of choice)...and then we get to the third album, "Famous Last Words".

I don't think the 3rd album got a British release at the time, but I bet it got a Japanese release! This album features no less than Yukihiro Takahashi (of YMO), Barry Adamson (of Magazine), Jamie West (of The Fixx), Thomas Dolby, Nick Plytas etc.

So, "Pop Muzik" indeed. I didn't go for the next two CD's in the series, a hard-to-find 4th album of African music and a "Best Of" - I've already got a 'best of' CD (on Music Club) which is pretty good, giving me the single version of "Pop Muzik' etc.

Now it's 2007, and we see he gets the "little paper album cover" ( = kami sleeve ) treatment in Japan. In Japan, he's probably most famous for either "Pop Muzik" or his collaboration with YMO's Ryuichi Sakamoto, "The Arrangement" (a 4 track EP). I believe he's also on Sakamoto's "Left Handed Dream" LP. I saw Scott on "Rage", the Australian music TV show, and he seemed like a nice enough guy (an early 80's TV show that was re-broadcast recently). Last year, I found a CD of his 'hippie' (late 60's) album, "Woman From The Warm Grass" - sure never knew about that one!

Razor & Tie did at least one or two CD's by "M" in the 90's, but they're out of print and fairly difficult to find - these Japanese CD's answer at least one "prayer", with Scott's work again available on CD. The new Victor Japan kami sleeves are great sounding and looking.

Certainly a curious period piece! Many fine B-sides and ‘rarities’ by well-known (and loved) artists – as well as some artists that many of us have not heard of! The Amboy Dukes is, of course, Ted Nugent. I believe both Johnnie Young and Normie Rowe are Australian performers (hence the Bee Gees songs?). Who are The Shevelles? Blossom Toes featured guitarist Brian Godding (who was later in Magma). Who are Tony Rivers & The Castaways? I believe Sounds Incorporated worked with Joe Meek (very likely before this performance). Who is William E.? Is The Monopoly and Raymond Froggatt one in the same? Probably the coolest songs here that aren’t by the obvious artists are the tunes by Sounds Incorporated and The Monopoly / Raymond Froggatt. Interesting choice of Bee Gees’ cover versions, eh? “House of Lords” is just great!

Writing about music...

...is like dancing about architecture...(or thereabouts)

This entry is written live, no editing, proofreading. So, love love love, folks.

There is a nifty little set of book by Continuum Publishers called "33 1/3". "Trout mask Replica" is the newest one I've obtained. It's $10.95, and all the previous editions have been $9.95. These are books about individual albums, and these books all look roughly the same size. I first started seeing these things in 2004. Being a good "music fan", I duly started checking them out, when possible. All of the books are written by different folks. Inquiring minds want to know: the ones I have in this series are:

#6 PINK FLOYD "Piper At The Gates of Dawn" (written when Syd was still alive)
#13 JAMES BROWN "Live At The Apollo" (written when James was still alive)
#14 JETHRO TULL "Aqualung" (first copy I found was mis-bound and I hadn't noticed, so I returned it to the publisher and they sent me a brand new properly bound copy - good guys!)

I seem to remember that the Bowie book was the one I liked best. If I had to pick a favorite album from this list, it would be "The Who Sell Out". But I do like all of these records.

Hmmm...book publishers writing guides for young readers/listeners - even when they can read hundreds of testimonials to these artists/albums on the internet...OK!

Beefheart book is fairly easy to read / comprehend. In one sitting, I read up to page 126. Lots of Zappa disrespect and history - and I neither agree nor disagree. Interesting, for a Zappa fan. I came to "Trout Mask" fairly early on (well, before "Decals" was released). I got the Wild Man Fischer album first (after hearing some short snatches of it on the Warner/Reprise "Songbook" double sampler LP), then came "Trout Mask" (which I, like many, first heard of the sampler LP "Zapped"). It took me 6 or 7 years before I found anybody to validate my interest in Beefheart, I only ever approached him via the FZ connection (hey, Don sang on "Hot Rats"!). People always seem to get uptight when I refer to an artist as someone who it is "somebody else's job to worry about" - but that's how I feel about Mr. Beefheart. I got "Trout Mask" when I was 11 or 12 years old, I memorized it (just played it again last night, while reading the book), copied it, fully ingested it...I made it to "Decals", but it never rang my chimes, particularly. Next blip on the radar was reading that Don was working with Frank again...never particularly cared much for "Bongo Fury" or "Bat Chain Puller". I only listened more closely to "Ice Cream For Crow" because a friend of mine was on it (Midnight Hatsize Snyder). I got to meet Mr. Beefheart, get my 2LP of "Trout Mask" autographed - ask him why/how ZNR "Barricades 3" had his artwork inside of the cover etc. Should've got my photo taken with him, but...you can't think of everything.

Decades on...I like him OK. I thought the BBC documentary on him painted a rather sad picture, with Don unable to talk very well etc. Shame that the high quality video that they have of him is of not such interesting material. I'm happy he can make more money with his art than with his music. This year, I noticed an internet "April Fool's" joke, about Beefheart wanting to tour again...
