England, 1964

11-17-08 England, 1964

The really big UK hits of 1964 (roughly in order):

DAVE CLARK 5 – Glad All Over (released in ’63, it topped the chart in early ’64)

THE SEARCHERS – Needles & Pins

BILLY J. KRAMER / DAKOTAS – Little Children

THE BEATLES – Can’t Buy Me Love

PETER AND GORDON – A World Without Love

THE SEARCHERS – Don’t Throw Your Love Away

THE ANIMALS – House Of The Rising Sun

THE ROLLING STONES – It’s All Over Now

THE BEATLES – A Hard Day’s Night

MANFRED MANN – Do Wah Diddy Diddy

THE HONEYCOMBS – Have I The Right? (Joe Meek production)

THE KINKS – You Really Got Me

HERMAN’S HERMITS – I’m Into Something Good

SANDIE SHAW – Always Something There To Remind Me

THE ROLLING STONES – Little Red Rooster

THE BEATLES – I Feel Fine

The slightly lesser hits of UK ’64 (not in such good order):

GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – I’m The One

GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying

GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – Ferry Cross The Mersey

THE ANIMALS – Baby Let Me Take You Home

THE ANIMALS – I’m Crying

THE ROLLING STONES – Not Fade Away

MANFRED MANN – 5-4-3-2-1

MANFRED MANN – Hubble Bubble Toil and Trouble

MANFRED MANN – Sha La La

THE KINKS – All Day And All Of The Night

HERMAN’S HERMITS – Show Me Girl

Darn near everything here should be fairly common knowledge. Maybe some of the lesser hits won’t immediately come to mind, but…

Despite having a single or two in 1963, The Rolling Stones finally came along for the ride in ’64, remaining to this day. I guess Ray Davies of The Kinks is still around. And Peter Noone still hawks something somewhere. Eric Burdon is still singing. Does Peter Asher still manager artists?

Some really dynamite singles on this list today!

ISTR that Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love" is actually a cast-off Lennon/McCartney number.

Sandie Shaw -- there was always something about her that really attracted me. I was reminded of my boyhood crush on her by a video clip you sent me once -- some tape (!!) of RSG!'s inaugural broadcast (when "the countdown" was hand-drawn illustrations on pieces of cardboard!). "I Feel Fine" was illustrated with a wine bottle and woman's hand holding a glass, and Sandie Shaw came out to sing "Girl Don't Come."

As it turns out, YouTube has a video that includes this clip, and "Little Red Rooster" had dropped down to #3 that week! :)
