England, 1963

11-14-08 England, 1963

There were no giant hits from England in America in 1963. The ‘beat boom’ gets going great guns – and the US does not much notice. The US did, however, have some non-US giant hits – notably Kyu Sakamoto (Japan) “Sukiyaki” and The Singing Nun (Belgium) “Dominique”.

In England, the ‘beat boom’ moved forward – the big hits:

4/13/63 GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – How Do You Do It?

5/2/63 THE BEATLES – From Me To You

6/20/63 GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – I Like It

8/8/63 THE SEARCHERS – Sweets For My Sweet

8/22/63 BILLY J. KRAMER & THE DAKOTAS – Bad To Me

9/12/63 THE BEATLES – She Loves You

10/31/63 GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – You’ll Never Walk Alone

12/12/63 THE BEATLES – I Want To Hold Your Hand

The slightly lesser hits:

1/10/63 THE TORNADOS – Globetrotter (a Joe Meek production)

1/10/63 HEINZ – Just Like Eddie (another Joe Meek production)

1/17/63 THE BEATLES – Please Please Me

5/2/63 BILLY J. KRAMER & THE DAKOTAS – Do You Want To Know A Secret?

5/9/63 FREDDIE & THE DREAMERS – If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody

6/20/63 SWINGING BLUE JEANS – It’s Too Late Now

7/25/63 THE ROLLING STONES – Come On

8/8/63 FREDDIE & THE DREAMERS – I’m Telling You Now

10/24/63 THE SEARCHERS – Sugar & Spice

11/7/63 FREDDIE & THE DREAMERS – You Were Made For Me

11/14/63 THE ROLLING STONES – I Wanna Be Your Man

11/17/63 BILLY J. KRAMER & THE DAKOTAS – I’ll Keep You Satisfied

11/21/63 DAVE CLARK 5 – Glad All Over

12/12/63 SWINGING BLUE JEANS – Hippy Hippy Shake

The “Also rans”: Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Frank Ifield, Jet Harris & Tony Meehan (“Diamonds”), and – in this reporter’s opinionBrian Poole & The Tremeloes.

Whole lotta Brian Epstein going on! Liverpool time now! Many of the above titles charted in the

US, in 1964! It’s like the US got to re-live 1963 in 1964, once The Beatles hit!

Things get a little bit nuts in 1964 – so much going on!
