I have two memories of Mr. Hayes. The first was seeing him on the Academy Awards show on TV, the years he won the Oscar of "Theme from Shaft". He performed the song live, as I recall he wore black pants, no short, and massive gold chains on his chest. Looked like a seriously bad mother, and left a lasting impression on a young suburban fellow.
The second was about 2003. I was editing an embarrassingly trite movie for the PAX network. Mr Hayes had a large role, and I got to meet him one day. Instead of the bad mother that I had seen on TV long ago, I met a very slender, slightly stooped, very gracious and soft-spoken man. When I mentioned the name of a mutual acquaintance, his smile was warm and genuine. I hope his friends and family are well.
I too, remember Mr. Hayes on the Oscars - the very definition of BMF! So he's dead? I just got home last night. I guess Scientology will need to recruit another celebrity for their ranks to take his place.
