C.V. For Today

3-8-08 C.V. FOR TODAY

Here are my answers to these Curriculum Vitae questions. Please feel free to use the same questions and return your responses to me.

What was the last record / CD you obtained?

Hermato Pascoal – “Por Diferentos Caminhos” (Brazilian 2LP set – in a trade)

If you could recommend a record / CD (of music) to someone and have that person actually listen to it, what would it be?

Bob Dylan & The Band – The Basement Tapes (Columbia/Sony 2LP or 2CD)

Do you think record stores will all close and people will only be able to purchase music (LP’s/CD’s) on-line eventually?

Something like that – there are fewer and fewer record / CD stores around here all the time

Do you ever copy music for yourself or your friends? What format(s) do you use?

Yes – I have recently made MD’s, cassettes and CD-R’s for friends; all these formats are still viable for me (wish I could cut records at home, but it hasn’t happened yet).

Do you watch TV very much anymore? If not, why?

Not very much – no real interest (and no interest in paying for cable) – best shows are “Globetrekker” and “Nature” (both on PBS)

What’s for lunch?

Today, it was a triple-decker turkey sandwich on wheat bread, French fries & iced tea.

Seen any good films lately?

No. Not really.

Any plans to leave your home anytime soon?

Yeah, I’m not there now – and will be leaving there shortly for my weekend with my GF in L.A.

What other question(s) would you like to know the answer(s) to?

When will Hermeto Pascoal come back to Los Angeles for more concerts?

I wrote an index for my blogs (8/02 - 3/08) - it's not perfect, but it's what I can keep track of - please let me know if this is of any interest to you. I realize that there's lots of stuff that I've posted that isn't designated as a "date" (i.e. it's own blog page). I plan on fashioning a big version of my oft-repeated tale of "How I Became A Record Collector" aka stories of "Young Ron". The best part about writing an index for the blogs is now I can see which artists I haven't written about yet!

What was the last record / CD you obtained?
- Slow Children UK Ensign LP pressing

If you could recommend a record / CD (of music) to someone and have that person actually listen to it, what would it be?
- Fashion: Fabrique

Do you think record stores will all close and people will only be able to purchase music (LP’s/CD’s) on-line eventually?
- Absolutely. Sad, but true. The social aspects of music collecting are withering on the vine by the second.

Do you ever copy music for yourself or your friends? What format(s) do you use?
- Yes. CD-R.

Do you watch TV very much anymore? If not, why? - Stopped cold 14 years ago. It was a waste of valuable time (not to mention an ever increasing amount of money) that could be better spent doing ANYTHING else, but especially, enjoying music!

What’s for lunch?
- Leftpver cornbread skillet pizza. Sort of like cornbread with the pizza fixings (sans sauce) baked into it.

Seen any good films lately?
- The last in theaters was The Darjeelng Limited. Films watched at home have been a bust lately. There have been many that we have stopped before the first hour was up. Some, in the first 15 minutes. "The Secret Life Of Words" was not among these. I liked that one a lot. Also "The Hunting Party" was quite good. Amazing in that it starred Richard Gere, not a fave.

Any plans to leave your home anytime soon?
- Only to go to RonKon! Those plans have been fully made for a few months now. We look to the trip with great anticipation!

What other question(s) would you like to know the answer(s) to?
- Will Hillary Clinton run as a 3rd party candidate this year?!?
- Will I ever get a better job? (I'm now trying)
- How much longer to $4.00/gal. gasoline? (I figure 18 months but am I an optimist?)
- Will we survive the food riots of 2016?
- Who really will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes?

What was the last record / CD you obtained?
- Deborah Holland "Bad Girl Once, Soccer Mom Now"

If you could recommend a record / CD (of music) to someone and have that person actually listen to it, what would it be?
-Boom Crash Opera - "Fabulous Beast" - in fact I just recommended and dubbed this disc for my 15 year old nephew this afternoon! He's eager to hear it.

Do you think record stores will all close and people will only be able to purchase music (LP’s/CD’s) on-line eventually?
-Definitely. Another five years?

Do you ever copy music for yourself or your friends? What format(s) do you use?
-Yep. CD-R.

Do you watch TV very much anymore? If not, why?
-Yeah, we have kids. We watch a few things together. We enjoy "Smallville" and this wacky show on the Food Network called "Ace Of Cakes"

What’s for lunch?
-Pulled pork tostada at Tijuana Flats. I'm not a big Tex-mex fan, but we have family visiting.

Seen any good films lately?
-No, nothing special lately.

Any plans to leave your home anytime soon?
-Taking my brother's family to Cocoa Beach tomorrow.

What other question(s) would you like to know the answer(s) to?
-Hmmm... it's late. Nothing profound is coming to mind at the moment.

What was the last record / CD you obtained?
Probably The Boomtown Rats' deluxe remaster of "Fine Art of Surfacing"

If you could recommend a record / CD (of music) to someone and have that person actually listen to it, what would it be?
Just one?? I don't think I can do this -- probably a Bowie or Eno record. I would depend greatly on the person, and my "read" of where his/her "head is at" maaaan.

Do you think record stores will all close and people will only be able to purchase music (LP’s/CD’s) on-line eventually?

For all practical purposes, yes.

Do you ever copy music for yourself or your friends? What format(s) do you use?

I make samplers on CD, and podcasts online.

Yes – I have recently made MD’s, cassettes and CD-R’s for friends; all these formats are still viable for me (wish I could cut records at home, but it hasn’t happened yet).

Do you watch TV very much anymore? If not, why?

Not as much as I did when I was young, primarily because I'm older and less of it appeals to me, plus I get a lot of information online now. I watch the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, Countdown (MSNBC) and The National (CBC) pretty faithfully, but these are all news shows. I watch a Canadian sitcom called Corner Gas because I'd like to write an episode someday. Funnily enough, I find myself going back to radio more often now (both "live" and via podcasts).

What’s for lunch?

Fish & Chips as often as I can get it, which up here is limited only by the money in my pocket. :)

Seen any good films lately?

The Band's Visit, about an Egyptian police band stuck in a backwoods Israeli town. Charming.

Saw several good "movies" at the Victoria Film Festival, but many were actually videos. Call me a snob, but films have to be shot on film to be called films imo.

Any plans to leave your home anytime soon?

My next foray is probably to Port Angeles, WA or Seattle, perhaps to another Canadian town, and then in June I have to be in Chicago for a wedding. I'm hoping to revisit Florida sometime after that.

What other question(s) would you like to know the answer(s) to?

If I'm so damn smart, why aren't I rich? :)
