5-7-08 Donovan – “Epistle to Dippy”
EPISTLE TO DIPPY / PREACHIN' LOVE EPIC US 5-10127 1967 2 TRKS no picture sleeve; both stock and promo copies
No doubt about it, my favorite 45 of 1967! The B-Side is good, but somewhat inconsequential. I was always amazed that the version of “Epistle to Dippy” is different (a re-recording?) on his “Greatest Hits” LP (a key change was added!). And that it was never on a proper Donovan LP, at the time. And that it’s as groovy as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones in 1967.
I recently read Don’s autobiography – “Dippy” is actually a specific person! “Epistle to Dippy” = “A Letter to Dippy”. Elevator in the brain hotel!
Harpsichord! Is that a John Cameron arrangement? Is Harold McNair in there? Or is it a John Paul Jones string arrangement? There aren’t exactly a ton of credits on this 45!
Shock! Horror! It doesn’t appear that I have ever written a specific blog on Donovan before! Oh, gosh! I love his stuff!

We recently watched "Don't Look Back" and I was amazed to have finally heard primordial Donovan from back in his much vaunted Dylan-clone phase! Of course, the music that made his fame in America that I had heard in bulk as a child is not very much like Dylan at all, so this was something I wondered about after reading talk of his slavish Dylan mode for years but never having actually heard it. Thank goodness he matured rather quickly into the trippy troubador he was clearly meant to be.
Donovan singles are all great! I saw him on his "Sutras" tour of the states in '91 and was "gobsmacked" by how many of those songs I retained since my early childhood. I had even forgotten that "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" was used in an ad for "Love's Baby Soft" cologne in my childhood until he played the song and it all came rushing back to me like the hot kiss at the end of a wet fist! Mr. Leitch - salud!
Gload to hear you have some time for Don, Jim-san.
