Now Playing

Sheila Chandra "The Zen Kiss" (Realworld CD) - boy, this surprised the heck out of me! I just love the two cuts here called "Speaking In Tongues" - firmly placing Ms. Chandra in a similar league with other astonishing vocalists like Urszula Dudziak and Mishio Ogawa. And this whole CD is (mostly) just her voice. I do not want to mis-state the style - whether it's not really acapella or sotto voce. This CD is part of a trilogy she did for the Realworld label - can't wait to find th other parts. I remember her from 'Indipop', an early 80's UK wave - and her memorable single "Ever So Lonely".

Ms. Chandra's style is called spoken bols and it is how tabla players are taught, using verbal analogs to the varieties of sounds a tabla makes. She's ventured heavily into the style, making a definite niche for herself.

It's certainly hypnotic! Anything with her name on it is worth a listen but her later work in largely in this arresting style.
